Lobbying on behalf of the poor

(From the March 17, 2011 edition of the Inland Register)

Approximately 300 Catholic leaders came to Washington, DC for the annual Catholic Social Ministry Gathering in February to urge Congress that, in this time of austerity and fiscal restraints, the budget not be balanced on the backs of the poor both at home and abroad. Fiscal responsibility also must include moral care. There is a possibility that assistance programs could be cut by 26 percent while the overall budget cut is projected to be about 3 percent. At last count 207 members of the House of Representatives and 70 Senators were visited by members of the gathering. The gathering’s theme was taken from Mathew 25:31-46. Pictured are Washington State representatives to the Social Ministry event, gathered outside the office of Washington Sen. Maria Cantwell (D).
