Catholic Youth Celebration returns to Spokane Diocese

the Inland Register

(From the April 7, 2011 edition of the Inland Register)

Youth from throughout Eastern Washington as well as the Diocese of Boise, Idaho, gathered at Gonzaga Prep last month for the Catholic Youth Celebration (CYC).

For years, the annual youth gathering took place in Spokane. Lack of funding curtailed youth ministry on a diocesan level in the years following the bankruptcy.

This year, however, adult volunteers worked with eight youth from Assumption Parish, Spokane – the Diocesan Youth Commission – to make CYC a reality once again.

This first revival brought in 134 youth from throughout the diocese, as well as St. Mary Parish in Moscow, Idaho, along with 44 chaperones, March 18-20 at Prep.

Keynote speakers were Doug Tooke and Dave Casey of Monarch Catholic Ministries. Tooke and Casey had spoken at past CYC gatherings as well.

Also returning to CYC was Brad Henning, a nationally-recognized speaker and expert on issues of adolescent sexuality.

Spokane psychologist Dr. Kent Hoffman of Gonzaga University spoke on self-worth; Ginny Cronin, on apologetics; Scott Cooper, from Catholic Charities’ Parish Social Ministry Office, talked on social justice; Becky Taylor, a clinical lab specialist in molecular biology, discussed stem cell research. Poor Clare Sisters from the Monastery of St. Clare in Spokane were present with information and answers to questions about vocations.

Bishop Blase Cupich visited CYC for a group presentation as well as to celebrate Mass with the group on Sunday.

“CYC was a great success,” said Hana Reichert, a member of the Youth Commission. “Everyone had a great time. The speakers were fantastic. The kids were enthusiastic. And we really appreciate the time and energy of all the speakers, especially Bishop Cupich, who made some changes to his very busy schedule so that he could be with us.”

Funding for this year’s CYC is still short and donations are being gratefully accepted. Send donations to Assumption Parish, 3624 W. Indian Trail Rd., Spokane, WA 99208. Note that the donation is for the Catholic Youth Celebration.

Students interested in participating in the Diocesan Youth Commission or adults interested in helping with next year’s CYC should send an email to
