Colbert parish’s KC Council earns top state awards
the Inland Register
(From the June 9, 2011 edition of the Inland Register)
The Washington State Council of the Knights of Columbus awarded top honors to Council 8872 of St. Joseph Parish in Colbert at the 108th Annual Convention held May 13-15 in Vancouver, Wash.
The awards included the Top Community Service Award, the Knight of the Year Award, and culminated in the Council itself receiving the Council of the Year Award.
The Community Service Award was given for the Council’s efforts in building a cool room for storing produce, a stock room, and a new entrance at the North County Food Pantry operated by New Hope Resource Center, a community support organization also based in Colbert, supported in part by St. Joseph Parish.
Art Smalley was chosen Knight of the Year from all the other 17,000 members of the Knights of Columbus in Washington State for his creation and management of the Colbert Council’s energetic programs this year.
To add icing to the cake, Grand Knight Dwane Berens accepted the Council of the Year honors from State Deputy John Wallace. The honor recognizes St. Joseph Council as the top council for their programs in Community, Church, Council, Pro-Life, Family, Youth, and Membership.
Said Berens, “This award is due to the efforts of my fellow Knights in service to the Community and Church in an effort to focus on the purpose of its charter as set out by the founder of the Knights of Columbus, Father Michael J. McGivney.”
