(From the June 9, 2011 edition of the Inland Register)

Winning the diocesan prize in the Catholic Campaign for Human Development’s multi-media art contest this year is Dong Phung (second from right), a seventh grader at St. Aloysius School in Spokane. Presenting his winner’s certificate last month were, from left, Gene DiRe, Associate Director of Catholic Charities; Connie Smith, Consultant for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development; Scott Cooper, director of Catholic Charities’ Parish Social Ministry office, holding the winning entry; Phung; and Nancy Giese, art teacher at St. Aloysius. The theme of this year’s contest was “Faith in Action! Uproot Poverty Together!” Phung, from Vietnam, has been in the United States only since August. His artwork includes captions in both English and Vietnamese. His work shows the acts of teaching, sharing, supporting and working together with modern versions of Jesus’ actions from the Gospels, such as finding the lost sheep or blessing the loaves and fishes.
