Sister M. Rita Louise (Margaret) Altman SNJM

Holy Names Sister M. Rita Louise Altman died July 17 in Spokane at the age of 91.

The funeral Mass was celebrated July 20 at the Convent of the Holy Names, Spokane.

Margaret Altman was born November 26, 1919 in Spokane. She attended St. Francis of Assisi School and Holy Names Academy before entering Religious life in 1937. She pronounced vows in 1939.

She earned a degree in music from Marylhurst College (now University) in Oregon and taught music, both privately and in classrooms, from 1939-80 in schools throughout Oregon and Washington.

In 1985 she began teaching English at the Foreign Mission Society’s center in Sendai, Japan. She stayed for two years before returning to her community. She retired to the Care Center two years ago.
