Dong Phung, now an eighth grader at St. John Vianney School, Spokane Valley, was the winner of the 2011 national Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) youth arts contest. His entry was a mandala-style colored pencil representation of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, with depictions of various Gospel stories of service to others. He received $500 in recognition of his work. He is pictured on the main station of the National Catholic Youth Conference in Indianapolis, where he was honored on Nov. 18. CCHD is the U.S. bishops’ program to combat the root causes of poverty in the United States. (IR photo courtesy of Catholic Charities Spokane)

And on a related thread...

Besides his own $500 award, Dong Phung (see photo at left) was given the opportunity to designate a matching grant to a local CCHD-funded group. He chose Blue Button Apparel, a local non-profit t-shirt and silk-screening enterprise that provides vocational training and jobs for at-risk youth. From left: Jake Hettich, a student at Spokane Falls Community College and a Blue Button participant; Scott Cooper, director of Catholic Charities Spokane’s Parish Social Ministry Office, presenting the matching CCHD award; and Scott Ellis, the founder and director of Blue Button Apparel.
