Honoring Our Lady of Guadalupe

the Inland Register

(From the January 19, 2012 edition of the Inland Register)

Members of Spokane’s St. Joseph Parish led a procession late on Sunday, Dec. 11, across the Monroe Street Bridge to the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes. There they were joined by many others to fill the Cathedral and celebrate a special Mass at 11 p.m. in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Father José Hernández, with Father Miguel Mejia, assisted by Deacon Chalo Martínez, presided as the people told the story of Our Lady visiting Juan Diego nearly 500 years ago. Mariachi music and dancers wearing traditiional Meso-American Indian clothing added to the celebration. The Mass concluded with a special hymn, “Las Mañanitas,” at midnight. There was a reception following the liturgical service. (IR photo courtesy of St. Joseph Parish)
