Sister Joseph Marie Kasel, a School Sister of Notre Dame who once served as the Bishop’s Secretary for Catholic Schools in the Spokane Diocese, died Dec. 13 in Mankato, Minn. She was 88 years old.
Her funeral Mass was celebrated Dec. 16 in Good Counsel Chapel, Mankato. Vespers was prayed for her the evening before. Burial was in the community’s cemetery in Mankato.
Mary Kasel was born in St. Paul in 1923. She entered the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1942, and professed first vows in 1945.
A life-long educator, she taught elementary grades and was also an elementary school administrator. She also served as her Religious community’s school supervisor, and as diocesan school administrator in Dubuque, Iowa (Associate Superintendent 1971-76); Winona, Minn. (1976-82); Spokane (1982-88); Colorado Springs, Colo. (1988-95); and Tyler, Texas (1996-2000).
