Bishop Cupich to lead Catholic Men’s Conference at GU next month

(From the February 16, 2012 edition of the Inland Register)

Trusting firmly in the Lord’s promise that “Wherever two or three of you are gathered in my name, I am in your midst” (Matthew 18:20), for months now a group of dedicated Catholic men have been gathering regularly for Tuesday morning prayer, study and mutual support at a local restaurant. The pre-work time gatherings of these sleepy-eyed disciples – several with spouses and families at home – have led to a deepened hunger to know more of their Catholic Faith and a desire for the personal “tools” to give better witness to their families and places of work.

At one gathering, the group felt inspired to organize a Catholic Men’s Conference for their brothers from the Diocese of Spokane, a conference which would be modeled on similar events held in recent times both for women and men throughout the Northwest.

The group found a kindred desire and ready blessing of their inspiration in Bishop Cupich. After all, the men reasoned, had he not called this past year for the “light of a new dawn” to spring upon the diocese? Certainly growth in Christ-centered spirituality was as the heart of such a new dawn.

The request bore almost immediate fruit. The result: Bishop Cupich himself is scheduled to lead a Catholic Men’s Conference at Gonzaga University’s Chapel (third floor, College Hall) on Saturday, March 10, beginning at 8:30 a.m. and concluding with a 4 p.m. celebration of the Eucharist. Lunch is included in the $25 registration fee.

The title of the Conference captures well its focus: “Hearts on Fire: Equipping Men for Spiritual Leadership.”

In a letter seeking the assistance of his priests and deacons in the promotion of the conference, Bishop Cupich wrote, “In the course of our pastoral ministry we all have encountered men of various ages whose hearts yearn for deeper spirituality and greater commitment to our Catholic Faith. This conference provides a welcome opportunity to call together these eager disciples and help form them into leaders of strength and substance in their homes, families, and places of work and play.

“This Conference is one among several opportunities for spiritual growth which are budding forth throughout the diocese,” wrote Bishop Cupich. “I am inspired by the sincerity, commitment and perseverance of the group of men who have organized this particular event. It is a first for the diocese and I welcome the blessings it will bring.”

For planning purposes, pre-event registrations for the Conference and a $25 participant fee can be sent to Catholic Diocese of Spokane, ATT: Hearts on Fire, P.O. Box 1453, Spokane, WA 99210-1453. (Scholarships are available.) Questions should be sent to: flucus@comcast.net or heartsonfire@dioceseofspokane.org.
