Generous Annual Catholic Appeal responses continue

the Inland Register

(From the May 17, 2012 edition of the Inland Register)

For yet a second month, Bishop Blase Cupich has had good news to share with the faithful about the steady pace of contributions made to the 2012 Annual Catholic Appeal.

Since announcing in the April issue of the Inland Register that the Appeal monetarily at least had reached its goal of $2.25 million, pledges and contributions from parishes throughout the diocese continue to increase in number. According to a mid-May report from the diocese’s Development Office, the Appeal has reached a total of $2,401,187.45. The report notes that 36 parishes have met or exceeded their goals. Another 10 parishes are on the verge of doing so. (Editor’s note: An updated report on parish progress is found here - pdf file; Adobe Reader required.)

In announcing the new figures, Bishop Cupich repeated his appreciation of the generosity of the faithful.

“Although I have been bishop of the diocese just short of two years, I have learned of the profound generosity of its people. Their continued giving to the Annual Catholic Appeal is a wonderful example of that goodness. It is impressive. It also is an inspiration to me and my ministry among God’s faithful.”

In a recent note to pastors and parish administrators, Bishop Cupich encouraged the continuation of the effort to achieve what he has identified as a “What-If” goal in relation to the 2012 ACA.

“If all parishes reached their goal this year – and those who exceed their goals have the same success as manifested in the 2011 ACA campaign – the ministries and administration of the diocese would benefit from an expanded goal of nearly $2.5 million,” he wrote. “Given the financial pressures we are all experiencing these days, the achieving of the “What-If” goal would be a real blessing to us all.”

“In a real sense the ACA campaign is not over – even if a parish has reached its assigned goal – until every Catholic household has had an opportunity to seriously and prayerfully consider its responsibility to share in the work of the local church,” he wrote.

That responsibility is captured in the theme for the 2012 Annual Catholic Appeal: “Co-Workers in the Field.”

The Annual Catholic Appeal is the diocese’s major funding source for its ministries and administration, including Catholic school administration, religious education and youth formation programs, priest and deacon formation, and the bishop’s ministry throughout the diocese. Contributions are held in a Diocesan Ministries Fund, a legal entity separate from diocesan operational funds. The distribution of its funds is managed by means of a grant request process.
