Bishop Cupich has announced changes in assignments for 16 diocesan priests. All assignments are effective July 1, 2012.

Father Jeff Core, Canonical Administrator of Walla Walla Catholic Schools, while retaining responsibilities as parochial vicar in the Walla Walla parishes.

Father Joachim Hiên was ordained to the priesthood in Danang Cathedral, Vietnam, on Dec. 22, 1974, after completing priestly formation at the Pontifical College of St. Pius X, Dalat City, Vietnam.

His first assignment in the Spokane Diocese was as associate pastor of St. Charles Parish, Spokane, in November 1977. The following September he was named spiritual director at Bishop White Seminary, Spokane.

He served as associate pastor of St. Patrick and St. Thomas More parishes in Spokane before being named pastor of the parishes in Tekoa and Rockford in 1986.

In June 1989 he became pastor of St. Francis Xavier Parish in Spokane.

Five years later he was in residence at St. Charles, Spokane, while serving in full-time ministry with the Association of Vietnamese Clergy and Religious in the United States and the Federation of Vietnamese Catholics.

He was appointed pastor of St. Charles in August 1997, and has served as pastor of St. Anthony, Spokane, since July 2003.

Father José Luís Millan was ordained a priest Aug. 11, 2000, for the Spokane Diocese, after studies at Bishop White Seminary and the Catholic University of Louvain in Louvain, Belgium, where he specialized in canon law.

He was first assigned as parochial vicar of St. Thomas More Parish, Spokane. Two years later he became pastor of the parishes in Chewelah, Valley, and Springdale.

He has been pastor of Sacred Heart, Pullman, since July 2008.

Msgr. Frank Bach returns to the life of a pastor after retiring in July 1997.

Msgr. Bach was ordained a priest on May 26, 1956, after studying at the Josephinum, a pontifical seminary in Ohio.

He first served as assistant pastor of St. Ann Parish, Spokane, before being named assistant of Immaculate Heart Retreat House (now Center) in Spokane in January 1960. At the same time he was named administrator of the mission in Wellpinit.

In July 1961 he became Diocesan Director of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, and in 1962 was released from diocesan duties for higher studies at The Catholic University of America.

In 1964 he began ministry as diocesan director of the Cursillo movement, and later that year became assistant diocesan director of Catholic Charities, followed by an appointment the next year as Director of Catholic Charities.

He was named pastor of Sacred Heart Parish, Spokane, in 1976, and four years later was named chancellor of the diocese.

He served briefly as administrator of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes, while continuing to serve as chancellor, and in 1983 was appointed pastor of St. Mary Parish in what is now Spokane Valley.

In March 1997 he was invested as a monsignor, and on July 14, 1997, retired for the first time.

Father Darrin Connall was ordained May 29, 1992. He has been Director of Vocations since Aug. 1, 2007; from June 1, 1999 until 2007 he was the diocese’s Director of Vocations.

He was parochial vicar of St. Thomas More, Spokane, after ordination, and then became pastor of the parishes in Colville, Kettle Falls, and Northport in 1994.

On June 1, 2000, he was named rector of Bishop White Seminary, where he served until July 1, 2011, when he was appointed rector of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes.

Msgr. Kevin Codd was ordained to the priesthood Aug. 25, 1979. He attended St. Charles School, Gonzaga Prep, Bishop White Seminary, and completed priestly formation at the American College in Louvain, Belgium.

He was first assistant pastor of St. Mary Parish in what is now Spokane Valley, and then in 1983 became pastor of the parishes in Brewster and Twisp.

In 1988 he began serving in the diocese’s mission in Guatemala before being named pastor of St. Patrick Parish, Walla Walla, on June 1, 1989.

After a sabbatical, in 1996 he became pastor of Immaculate Conception Parish, Oroville.

In 1999 he returned to his alma mater in Belgium, this time as vice-rector of the American College. Two years later he became rector.

He was elevated to the rank of monsignor on Aug. 2, 2007, and the following June was named pastor of Sacred Heart Parish, Othello.

He became pastor of the St. Thomas More Catholic Student Center in Pullman in August 2010.

Father Jeff Core was ordained to the priesthood May 26, 2011, and was assigned as parochial vicar of the three parishes in Walla Walla on July 1, 2011, and at the same time as a teacher and chaplain at DeSales High School there.

He earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in both Philosophy and History from Holy Names College in Oakland, Calif., and was director of campus ministry at the University of Great Falls in Montana prior to joining the priestly formation program. He completed his priestly formation program at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.

Father Vincent Van Dao Nguyen was ordained a priest on Dec. 21, 2005, for the Spokane Diocese.

He studied theology in France before entering the priestly formation program at Bishop White Seminary. He studied theology at Mount Angel Seminary, St. Benedict, Ore.

He first served as parochial vicar of St. Thomas More Parish, Spokane, before he was named administrator of the parishes in Rosalia, St. John, Oakesdale, and Tekoa in 2007.

In October 2008 he was assigned as parochial vicar of St. Patrick Parish, Walla Walla, and the following year was appointed pastor of the parishes in Chewelah, Springdale, and Valley, and the mission at Jump Off Joe.

Father Gustavo Ruiz was ordained July 7, 2006, as a priest of the Spokane Diocese.

He studied at Bishop White Seminary, Spokane, and Mount Angel Seminary, St. Benedict, Ore., prior to ordination.

His first assignment: parochial vicar of St. Patrick Parish, Pasco. Two years later he became pastor of the parishes in Brewster and Twisp.

In July of last year he moved to the three parishes in Walla Walla as parochial vicar.

Father Jeff Lewis was ordained to the priesthood May 26 of last year, and has served since then as parochial vicar of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes.

He holds both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in business from Washington State University, and completed priestly formation at The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C.

Father Michael Savelesky has been pastor of Assumption Parish, Spokane, since June 2001.

He was ordained a priest of the Spokane Diocese on Aug. 4, 1973, after studies at Bishop White Seminary and The American College in Louvain, Belgium.

He was assistant pastor of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes before being assigned to Bishop White Seminary as co-director of formation in 1975. He became rector in 1976.

He has twice served the diocese as director of the Deacon Formation Program, and was editor of the Inland Register from 1980-85.

In addition to Assumption Parish, Father Savelesky has been pastor of St. Peter Parish, Spokane, and St. Patrick and St. Francis of Assisi parishes in Walla Walla.

He was named Moderator of the Curia July 1, 2011.

Father José Luís Hernandez was ordained a priest of the diocese on June 29, 1999, after studies at Bishop White Seminary and St. Paul Seminary, St. Paul, Minn.

After priestly ordination he served as parochial vicar of St. Patrick Parish, Pasco, before moving the next year to St. Patrick Parish, Walla Walla, also as parochial vicar.

He became pastor of the parishes in Brewster and Twisp in 2001, and in 2005 was appointed pastor of St. Rose of Lima Parish, Cheney, where he also ministered at the Newman Center and in detention ministry.

Last July he became pastor of the parishes in Tekoa, Rosalia, Oakesdale, and St. John, as well as sacramental minister to the Hispanic community of St. Joseph Parish, Spokane, while in residence at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes.

Father Kevin Oiland, ordained to the priesthood June 26, 2009, studied at Mount Angel Seminary in Oregon prior to ordination.

He served two years as parochial vicar of St. Patrick and St. Francis of Assisi parishes, and as chaplain/teacher at DeSales High School, Walla Walla.

In July of last year he was named parochial vicar of the parishes in Colville, Northport, Kettle Falls, Metaline Falls, and Ione. The parishes in Republic and Curlew were added to those responsibilities at the end of last November.

Father Pedro Bautista-Peraza is the new pastor of the three parishes in Walla Walla.

He studied at Bishop White Seminary and the American College in Louvain, Belgium, prior to priestly ordination on Aug. 7, 2004.

He was parochial vicar of St. Patrick and St. Francis of Assisi parishes in Walla Walla immediately after ordination. Two years later he became pastor of the parishes in Connell and Eltopia.

Father Patrick Kerst has been pastor of St. Patrick and St. Francis of Assisi Parish, Walla Walla, since June 2001. Last July he added Assumption Parish, Walla Walla, to that list.

He was ordained a priest May 23, 1990, after studying at Bishop White Seminary and St. Paul Seminary, St. Paul, Minn.

He was first assigned as associate pastor of St. Patrick Parish, Pasco, before moving to St. Patrick and St. Francis of Assisi, Walla Walla, as parochial vicar in 1994.

Father Kerst also serves as Director of Continuing Education for Priests, a post he has held since February 2010.

Father Victor Blazovich was ordained to the priesthood June 23, 2000.

He studied at Bishop White Seminary and North American College, Rome, prior to ordination.

In addition to his priestly formation studies, Father Blazovich holds degrees in psychology and business administration from Eastern Washington University.

He was parochial vicar of Our Lady of Fatima Parish, Spokane, for a little less than a year before he moved to become pastor of the parishes in Colton and Uniontown in 2001.

In 2004 he became pastor of the parishes in Colville, Kettle Falls, and Northport, and in 2007 returned to ministry in Spokane as pastor of St. Francis Xavier Parish.

He has been pastor of St. Mary Parish, Spokane Valley, since July 2010.
