L’Arche Spokane seeks live-in assistants, part-time staff
the Inland Register
(From the July 19, 2012 edition of the Inland Register)
Do you desire to work with people with Intellectual Disabilities and participate in the Mission of L’Arche?
At L’Arche we believe that people with disabilities may have disabilities but they have strong abilities in the way of heart, of friendship and transforming the people around them.
Lauren has worked with L’Arche for one year as a part of the Jesuit Volunteer Corp. She will be leaving the end of July. As she reflected on her friendship with Hal (a member of the L’Arche community), which had developed over weekly coffee dates, Lauren said, “Through these times Hal showed me how to extend the offer of friendship to the world with gracious hellos and genuine smiles, how to slow down and really be with someone and how to stop and listen (I mean actually listen to someone without focusing on what to say next or what I needed to get ready for dinner that night). When I actually took the time do these things during coffee and at Harvest House I was amazed at the gifts that I began to see and the way that I was being transformed. My ideas of service, change, and growth were accurate, yet backwards. I was being served. I was changing; I was growing.…”
We are looking for two types of employees:
• People who desire to live in Christian community with our core members for one or two years. People earn a monthly stipend. Room, board and health insurance is included. Americorp grants are available.
