Guatemala Mission radio station plans celebration of 50 years

(From the July 19, 2012 edition of the Inland Register)

Fifty years ago, the “Voice of Nahualá” radio station was established by Spokane Diocese missionaries. Now known as Nawal Estereo, the effort is organizing a golden anniversary celebration for November. (IR photo courtesy of the Guatemala Commission)

“Receive our greetings in hopes of many blessings in every activity. Today the all powerful God gives us the satisfaction that we are completing 50 years of the missionary work of the community of Spokane with the radio station.“ (Sent by the Board of Directors of the Radio Station, Nawal Estereo, March 2012.)

Fifty years ago, in 1962, Father John Rompa, a Spokane diocesan priest and Guatemala missionary, founded a religious and educational radio station in Nahualá, Guatemala, one of the villages in the Spokane Diocese mission. This “Voice of Nahualá” opened up communication in remote areas, broadcasting religious, educational, musical, and current news to over 1.5 million people in the indigenous language K’iche.

In 1973, the Association for Development and Education (ADEP), a non-profit corporation, assumed control of The Voice of Nahuala radio station. Today the station is staffed entirely by native people of the area, and they have officially changed the name to Nawal Estereo 93.1. They continue their wonderful broadcasts throughout the Sololá Diocese in Guatemala.

“This celebration we are planning will be on the 22nd of November 2012,” continues the invitation. “For this reason we are sending out invitation to the Spokane Mission so that you might be with us on this day so that we might strengthen the uniting ties between us and the blessings we have received through you, and for the solidarity that you have continued to demonstrate with the indigenous communities, the poor of Guatemala.”

Celebrations for the 50th Anniversary will continue in our mission throughout the week of Nov. 18-23. If you are interested in traveling to the mission and participating in the celebrations, please call (509) 924-1346.
