Leadership opportunity

the Inland Register

(From the July 19, 2012 edition of the Inland Register)

A student committee from Gonzaga Prep served as the grant review committee for an Operation Rice Bowl (ORB) Innovation Grant. ORB funds are collected during Lent each year; a portion is forwarded to Catholic Relief Services, the U.S. bishops’ overseas development and emergency assistance program, and some of the funds remain for use within the Spokane Diocese. The students evaluated 25 different grants, received in application for the $5,000 Innovation Grant. According to Scott Cooper, Parish Social Ministry director for Spokane Catholic Charities, “We sought to partner” with the students to give “a leadership opportunity and experience with the needs around hunger and nutrition in our area, as well as all of the good work being done to address it.” The committee awarded the funds to Martin Luther King Jr. Family Outreach Center in Spokane, to help fund their summer program that feeds low-income children who will miss school-based meal programs during the summer school vacation. The student committee also oversees Prep’s annual fall Food Drive. (IR photo courtesy of Barry Barfield)
