On Oct. 11, Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center & Children’s Hospital held its 20th annual Sister Peter Claver Humanitarian Award program to honor individuals who reflect Sister’s compassion and humanitarian leadership.
Providence Sister Peter Claver was Sacred Heart’s administrator and a beloved community leader for 24 years.
The 2012 Humanitarian Award winner is Ed McCarron, director of the House of Charity. He has made a positive impact on the lives of thousands of visitors to Spokane’s downtown homeless shelter. As one of the most knowledgeable leaders in the State on the topic of homelessness, he has been integral in addressing the impact it has on the Spokane community. Nominators said McCarron knows the names and personal stories of those who come to the House of Charity, and his friendship and compassion has infused otherwise hopeless people with confidence and inspiration to turn their lives around.
Accepting the award, McCarron said it really belonged “to all the staff and volunteers who serve at the House of Charity.”
McCarron began his service to the mission as a Jesuit volunteer, then staff member, and has been the director for the last 16 years.
