SEATTLE – Michael Wilson, Chief Executive of Providence Health Care – Eastern Washington Region, received the prestigious Joe Hopkins Memorial Award from the Washington State Hospital Association during the organization’s annual meeting this month. The award is given to an individual who has displayed vision, leadership, and dedication to health care in Washington State.
Over the course of his career, Wilson led re-organization efforts in three different health care institutions in Washington State. He was a pioneer in recognizing and promoting the importance of electronic medical records. Wilson is also a past WSHA chair.
The Joe Hopkins award is named after a former hospital association chair and hospital administrator who lost his battle with cancer in 1987. The award was created in honor of Hopkins’s outstanding leadership and special qualities of warmth, persistence, insight, hardworking attitude, and humor.

PORTLAND – The National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother, commonly referred to as “The Grotto,” will be hosting its annual Christmas Festival of Lights beginning Friday, Nov. 23-Friday, Dec. 30 this year. Each evening’s events run from 5-9:30 p.m. (closed Christmas Day). The Festival of Lights is billed as “the largest Christmas choral festival in the world,” with performances by school, church and civic choirs of the region. Each evening features five indoor concerts in The Grotto’s chapel. Continuous family entertainment takes place in the plaza area, including caroling, puppetry, and a live animal petting zoo.
Tickets are $9 general admission, $8 for seniors age 65 and over, $4 for children ages 3–12, and no charge for children age 2 and under. The Grotto is located at N.E. 85th and Sandy Blvd. in Portland.
