Creighton University’s Father Larry Gillick SJ to lead second annual Catholic Men’s Conference March 2 at Gonzaga University
the Inland Register
(From the January 17, 2013 edition of the Inland Register)
Inspired by their success last year in presenting a Catholic Men’s Conference, a group of Spokane men who meet weekly for prayer and fellowship have decided to sponsor another conference this year.
The group, which titles its organization “Hearts on Fire,” will offer a conference for Catholic men on Saturday, March 2, at Gonzaga University’s Student Chapel, third floor of the university’s College Hall.
The chapel resounded in March of 2012 with the voices of some 130 men; this year a larger gathering is anticipated.
“Nothing succeeds like success,” said James Diehl, chairman of the planning committee. “Last year the sincerity of men from all walks of life, who were so serious about enriching their personal faith lives as well as their marriages and community commitments, blessed us all profoundly. God used our conference to do an immense amount of good.”
Bishop Blase Cupich led last year’s conference, with the theme “Equipping Men for Spiritual Leadership.” The 2013 conference will focus on “Being a Prophetic Man in a Struggling Culture.”
Jesuit Father Larry Gillick, director of the Deglman Center for Ignatian Spirituality at Creighton University in Omaha, Neb., will lead this year’s conference. Father Gillick offers spiritual direction to students, faculty and alumni at Creighton and directs retreats and days of reflection around the country.
“Father Gillick’s physical sight is severely impaired, but his insights into human nature and the dynamics of spiritual and human formation are outstanding,” said Bishop Cupich. “This man of the Gospel blends enthusiasm and humor with deep theological understanding and practical challenge to live the Gospel. I look forward to welcoming him at the Conference.”
Father Gillick will make three presentations: “The Qualities of the Prophetic Man of Faith,” “The Tensions Experienced by the Prophetic Man of Faith,” and “The Practical Prophetic Man of Faith.”
Each presentation will be followed by a time for prayer and reflection and, for those who wish, shared conversation.
The day, which begins at 8:30 a.m., will include lunch at the nearby Knights of Columbus Hall. Bishop Cupich will conclude the day by presiding at a 4 p.m. celebration of the Eucharist.
Registrations for the Conference and a $30 participant fee can be sent to: Catholic Diocese of Spokane, ATT: Hearts on Fire, P.O. Box 1453, Spokane, WA 99210-1453. Scholarships are available. Registrations are due Feb. 23.
