Donna Connell, chair of the Guatemala Commission, and her husband, Ron, visited Sacred Heart Parish, Pullman, recently, to present a banner of thanks and appreciation from Radio Nawal Estereo, which operates within the Spokane Diocese’s Guatemala Mission.

The banner, handmade by people of the mission, was sent in appreciation for 50 years of Spokane Diocese sponsorship of the radio station. The banner was presented to Sacred Heart because the parish has provided financial support to the station for 44 of the station’s 50 years of operation.

The radio station was founded in 1962 by the late Father John Rompa, a priest of the Spokane Diocese who twice served in the mission.

Initially, the station was known as “The Voice of Nahualá.” Sister Janet Druffel of the School Sisters of Notre Dame provided leadership from 1965-1990; now the station is operated by a local Board of Directors, of which Sister Janet is a member.

The 10-member staff, natives of the area, broadcasts a variety of programming 18 hours each day.

Radio Nawal Estereo was the first radio station to broadcast in Mayan languages. The broadcasts educate and inspire thousands of rural indigenous people in Guatemala’s western highlands, providing specialized programming for youth, women, farmers, and other marginalized groups. Religious programming includes music, fiestas, prayer meetings, processions, and coverage of other religious events.
