A diocese-wide celebration of the Guatemala mission is being hosted Tuesday, April 30, at Barrister’s Winery, 1213 W. Railroad Ave., Spokane, from 5:30-8 p.m.

Honored guests will be Bishop Blase Cupich and Father David Baronti, the Spokane Diocese priest who has served for 37 years in the mission.

Father Baronti will report on current events in Ixtahuacán, the community in which he serves, including updates on the effects of the November earthquake and subsequent recovery.

Father Baronti has been involved in building a retreat center near the village, works with the Youth Group, and with the Parish Council of Santa Catarina, Ixtahuacán, in providing a religious education program for over 500 children. They also are working to remodel a nearby building to adequately hold this emerging and successful program.

Father Baronti travels over very primitive roads to 14 outlying communities for Mass and other sacraments. In addition, through funds donated by people and parishes in Eastern Washington, he has been able to assist many individuals in school and seminary.

The evening will include a photo presentation of people and programs which are supported by the Mission, brief reports by featured parishes, and introduction of Guatemala Commission members. Weavings made by Mayans of the mission will be available for purchase and a drawing will be held.

The Diocesan Guatemala Commission, in cooperation with Barrister Winery, is hosting this event. There is no cost for admission, beverages (coffee, punch, water) and appetizers. Wine will be available for purchase.
