The Spokane Diocese’s second annual VOCARE retreat for young women ages 13-18 will be held Sunday to Wednesday, June 23-26, at Immaculate Heart Retreat Center, 6910 S. Ben Burr Rd. in Spokane.

The retreat will consist of two tracks – one for new participants who will follow much of the program as offered last year, and one for returning retreatants.

“Vocare” is a Latin word meaning “to call.” This vocation event offers young ladies the chance to meet Sisters of the different communities living and working in the Spokane Diocese and to find out more about their prayer, ministries and community living.

Last year 31 girls participated in the retreat. They resided at Immaculate Heart Retreat Center and spent their days traveling by bus to visit places in Spokane where Sisters live and work, such as St. Joseph Family Center, Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center and Providence Emilie Court Assisted Living, the Missionaries of Charity at Spokane’s St. Patrick Parish, and the Poor Clare Sisters at the Monastery of St. Clare in north Spokane.

Participants also visited the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes, the memorial to the Sisters at Holy Cross Cemetery, and toured Women’s Hearth, where four Religious communities work together to provide a drop-in center for women.

This year’s participants will attend Mass each day, participate in prayer services and a Holy Hour, hear the vocation stories of the Sisters, and learn about vowed Religious life in general and the charisms of various communities in particular. Bishop Blase Cupich will celebrate the closing Mass this year with the young women and their parents. Time will also be enjoyed in getting to know each other and playing games that are both educational and some just for fun.

Cost of the retreat is $50/person, and $30 for each additional sibling from the same family.

Although the cost of the retreat is being kept as low as possible, scholarships are available. Financial support for last year’s VOCARE retreat came from throughout the Spokane Catholic community, including the diocese’s Vocation Office, Immaculate Heart Retreat Center, the Spokane Serra Club, Councils and Assemblies of the Knights of Columbus, Courts of the Catholic Daughters, the Home Schooling Parents Group, Secular Franciscans, and individual donors. Gonzaga Prep donated the bus and driver. The Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Church contributed gracious hospitality and dedicated work throughout the event at the Retreat Center, where they reside.

The Religious Congregations who have Sisters serving in the diocese also contributed financially, provided display tables, and came and joined the retreat to pray and share their stories with the girls.

VOCARE 2013 is being organized by the Sisters Diocesan Vocation Team – Sister Sharon Bongiorno (Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration), Sister Anne Bosserman (Sisters of the Holy Names), Sister Colleen Byrne (Poor Clares), Sister Maria Lourdes Cleto (Sisters of Providence), Sister Mary Joanna Ranalli, and Sister Elaine Thaden (Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia).

Registration will close on June 1 for Spokane Diocese and if available, places will be open to girls from the Yakima Diocese or the Diocese of Boise.

Brochures with further information will be available in the parishes by the end of March. Please contact Sister Mary Joanna Ranalli of the Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Church, with further questions: call 509-481-8862 or e-mail
