Assignment changes announced for 18 diocesan priests

After seeking the advice of the Diocesan Consultors, Bishop Blase J. Cupich has made the following appointments:
All assignments are effective July 1, 2013, unless otherwise noted.
• Rev. Msgr. Frank Bach, from pastor of Sacred Heart, Pullman
• Rev. Msgr. Pedro Ramírez, from pastor of St. Thomas More, Spokane, effective Nov. 1, 2013.
• Rev. Roy Floch, from pastor, St. Pascal, Spokane, to pastor, Immaculate Conception, Davenport; St. Francis, Harrington; Sacred Heart, Wellpinit; Our Lady of Lourdes, West End; and St. Philip Benizi, Ford.
• Rev. Michael Ishida, from pastor, Sacred Heart, Wilbur, and St. Joseph, Odessa, to Senior Parochial Vicar, Assumption, St. Francis and St. Patrick, Walla Walla.
• Rev. Gustavo Ruiz, from parochial vicar of Immaculate Conception, Colville; Pure Heart of Mary, Northport;, Sacred Heart, Kettle Falls; Immaculate Conception, Republic, and its mission, St. Patrick, Curlew, to Administrator of St. Anne, Medical Lake; St. Michael, Reardan; and Mary Queen, Sprague.
• Rev. Tyler Smedley, from Parochial Vicar of Assumption, St. Francis and St. Patrick, Walla Walla to Parochial Vicar of Immaculate Conception, Colville; Pure Heart of Mary, Northport; Sacred Heart, Kettle Falls; and Immaculate Conception, Republic, and its mission, St. Patrick, Curlew.
Bishop Cupich has announced new assignments for 18 priests serving in the Spokane Diocese.
Unless otherwise noted, all assignments are effective July 1 of this year.
• After coming out of retirement to serve as pastor of Sacred Heart Parish, Pullman, Msgr. Frank Bach is returning to retirement status.
Mgsr. Frank Bach was ordained a priest of the Spokane Diocese on May 26, 1956. He has held a number of pastoral and administrative positions within the Church in Eastern Washington, including director of Catholic Charities and service as the diocese’s chancellor. After 14 years at St. Mary Parish in Spokane Valley he retired in July 1997, but retired to active ministry as pastor of Sacred Heart, Pullman, in July 2012.
Father Dan Barnett, pastor of St. Patrick, Pasco, since August 2007, was ordained to the priesthood on June 23, 2000. His first assignment as a priest was to the Pasco parish, as parochial vicar. He then was named pastor of St. Patrick and St. Francis Xavier parishes, Spokane, prior to his move to Pasco.
Father Barnett has also served as the diocese’s Director of Vocations.
Father Joseph Bell, ordained to the priesthood June 27, 1974, has been pastor of St. John Vianney Parish, Spokane Valley, since June 2009.
He has been pastor of several parishes in the diocese, including St. Peter, Assumption, and Sacred Heart in Spokane, as well as the parishes in Brewster and Twisp. He was associate pastor at St. Augustine and St. Thomas More, Spokane, and St. Mary, Spokane Valley, and also served as assistant diocesan vocations director.
Father Jeff Core has served the Catholic community in Walla Walla since his ordination to the priesthood on May 26, 2011.
He has been parochial vicar of the three Walla Walla parishes since ordination. Last July he also took on the role of canonical administrator of the Walla Walla Catholic schools.
Father Roy Floch has been pastor of St. Paschal Parish, Spokane Valley, since August 2007.
He was ordained to the priesthood on Oct. 29, 1977.
In addition to his assignment to St. Paschal, Father Floch has had a number of other ministries as a priest: pastor of the parishes in Wilbur and Odessa; pastor of St. Joseph Trentwood; associate pastor of St. Thomas More, Spokane, and St. Patrick, Pasco; administrator of the parishes in Northport and Kettle Falls.
He was spiritual director of Bishop White Seminary and sacramental minister for the Newman ministry at Eastern Washington University, Cheney, and also ministered as a U.S. Army chaplain.
Father Michael Ishida was ordained July 7, 2006, and has been pastor of the parishes in Wilbur and Odessa since Aug. 1, 2007.
Prior to that assignment, Father Ishida was parochial vicar of St. Patrick and St. Francis Xavier parishes in Spokane.
Father John Krier was ordained June 7, 1969, for the Diocese of Great Falls-Billings.
After service as parochial vicar of St. Mary Parish, Spokane Valley, Father Krier became pastor of the parishes in Davenport, Reardan, and Harrington in July 1996.
On Jan. 1, 2000, Father Krier became pastor of the parishes in Medical Lake and Sprague.
In addition to his pastoral work, Father Krier has been a counselor. He became a certified addiction counselor in 1972.
Father David Kuttner was ordained to the priesthood June 26, 2009.
On Aug. 1 of that year he was named parochial vicar of St. Thomas More Parish, Spokane.
One year later – Aug. 1, 2010 – he was named pastor of the parishes in Oroville and Tonasket.
Father Jeffrey Lewis remains in the parishes where he has served as administrator since last July – Chewelah, Springdale, and Valley. As of July 1 of this year, he becomes pastor of those three parishes.
Father Lewis was ordained a priest on May 26, 2011. Initially he was assigned as parochial vicar of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes in Spokane. Last July 1 he was named administrator of the three parishes of which he will now be pastor.
Father Patrick MacMahon was ordained to the priesthood on April 12, 1969.
A native of Ireland, Father MacMahon served for a time in Birmingham, England, and in California parishes before coming to the Spokane Diocese.
He was named administrator of the parish in Wilbur in 1986. He then served as pastors of the parishes in Colton and Uniontown, beginning in 1994.
In June 2007 Father MacMahon became pastor of the parishes in Davenport, Harrington, and Reardan.
Father José Jaime Maldonado, who came to the Spokane Diocese from Mexico, becomes the new administrator of the parishes in Oroville and Tonasket on July 1.
He was ordained to the priesthood on May 24, 2002.
His first assignment as a priest was as parochial vicar of St. Patrick Parish, Pasco.
In 2005 he was named administrator of the parishes in Brewster and Twisp, followed by an assignment as pastor of the parishes in Chewelah, Springdale, and Valley in 2008.
Father Maldonado has also served the diocese as parochial vicar of St. Patrick and St. Francis of Assisi parishes in Walla Walla.
Father Richard Poole has been a U.S. Army chaplain since June 1, 2009.
He was ordained to the priesthood for the Spokane Diocese on June 23, 1994.
Initially, Father Pool was parochial vicar of St. Patrick Parish, Pasco, before being named pastor of the parishes in Connell and Eltopia in August 1995. In July 2005 he added duties as administrator of St. Agnes in Ritzville to his pastoral role.
In August 2006 he was named to St. John Vianney Parish, Spokane Valley, where he was pastor prior to his military service.
Msgr. Pedro Ramírez, a native of Mexico, was ordained for the Spokane Diocese on Aug. 3, 1974.
He was assistant pastor in Othello and, five years later, in Pasco, before moving to the parishes in Brewster and Twisp as pastor in 1988.
Three years later, in 1991, he was named pastor of St. Patrick in Pasco.
He also served the Spanish-speaking Cursillo in the diocese as spiritual director.
He was invested as a monsignor in 1999, and since August 2007 has been pastor of St. Thomas More in Spokane.
Father Gustavo Ruíz, also originally from Mexico, was ordained to the priesthood July 7, 2006.
He was parochial vicar of St. Patrick Parish, Pasco, until he was named pastor of the parishes in Brewster and Twisp in 2008.
In 2011 he moved to Walla Walla, to become parochial vicar of the three parishes there, and in July 2012 moved, again as parochial vicar, to serve the parishes in Colville, Northport, Kettle Falls, Republic, and the Curlew mission.
Father Tyler Smedley has been ministering as parochial vicar of the three parishes in Walla Walla since ordination to the priesthood on May 26, 2011.
Father Kenneth St. Hilaire’s first assignment after priestly ordination on June 29, 2007, was to St. Francis Xavier and St. Patrick parishes in Spokane, as parochial vicar. At that time he was also named director of spiritual formation at Bishop White Seminary, Spokane.
He became St. Patrick’s pastor on July 1, 2010.
Father Gene Tracy was ordained a priest of the Spokane Diocese on Sept. 6, 1991.
He has been pastor of St. Francis Xavier, Spokane, since July 1, 2010 – the parish where he first ministered as a priest, as parochial vicar, beginning August 1991.
He also has been pastor of several other parishes: Eltopia and Connell, and in Spokane at St. Peter, St. Anthony, and St. Charles parishes, in addition to St. Francis Xavier.
Father Steve Werner was parochial vicar of St. Patrick, Pasco, immediately after priestly ordination in 1998, on May 22.
In August 1999 he was assigned as pastor of the parishes in Oroville and Tonasket, and in 2002 moved to Pullman, to be pastor of St. Thomas More Catholic Student Center.
He was named pastor of the parishes in Colville, Kettle Falls, and Northport in February 2010, and in July 2011 added pastor duties at Metalline Falls and Ione. On Nov. 28, 2011, the parish in Republic, and its mission in Curlew, also became his responsibility as pastor.
