Deacon Ned Bowen, a deacon of the Archdiocese of Newark, N.J., who lived in the Spokane Diocese at the time of his death, died March 26.
The funeral Mass was celebrated April 2 at St. Mary Parish, Spokane Valley.
Deacon Bowen was born July 9, 1930 in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Ed and Gerry Bowen. Ned married Eileen Leone on Jan. 3, 1954 at St. Malachy Church, New York, N.Y.
He was a restaurateur in the New York-New Jersey area for 20 years, an advocate for children with St. Christopher-Ottilie, and more recently has been very active in phone ministry as a member of the prayer chain of St. Mary Parish, Spokane Valley.
In 1975 he was ordained a deacon for the Archdiocese of Newark, ministering to the sick and shut-in.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Eileen Bowen of Greenacres, Wash.; daughter, Marirose Bowen Hogan of Catskill, N.Y.; sons Ned Bowen Jr. of Greenacres and Gene Bowen of Warwick, N.Y.; three daughters-in-law; sisters Barbara Bowen Kostensky of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, and Dean Hart of Gretna, La.; and 10 grandchildren. Deacon Bowen was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Tom Bowen.
