Catholic Youth Celebration 2013: ‘amazing, amazing, amazing’

(From the May 16, 2013 edition of the Inland Register)
Sacred Heart Parish, Othello, had a very impressive showing at CYC 2013.
With the theme “Go! Make Disciples of All the Nations,” the Spokane Diocese’s 2013 Catholic Youth Celebration (CYC) brought together some 168 youth and chaperones Friday and Saturday, April 26-27 at Gonzaga Prep in Spokane.
Deacon Paul Heric, assistant to the Moderator of the Curia and an organizer for the event, called the youth celebration “amazing, amazing, amazing.”
Unlike some past years, the 2013 celebration saw participation from youth and adult youth ministers only from the Spokane Diocese – although most corners of the diocese were represented.
Of particular note was a group of about 30 from Sacred Heart Parish in Othello.
Father José Robles-Sanchez, a priest of the Diocese of Alexandria, La., was keynote speaker and presider at Saturday’s closing Mass for CYC 2013.
Keynote speaker was Father José Robles-Sanchez, a priest of the Diocese of Alexandria, La., who “won the youth over” with his “bold proclamation of not being afraid to go and be a witness to your faith,” said Deacon Heric.
Music was provided by Dennis Zender, a Catholic singer-songwriter and pastoral musician in Snohomish, Wash.
The 2013 CYC was a result of consultation and conversation during the summer of 2012 with pastors, youth ministers, and laity. A diocesan youth event emerged consistently as one of the most important efforts needed for the church in Eastern Washington, said Deacon Heric.
CYC, he said, “unified the diocese with a singular event” that demonstrated that the church is indeed “moving forward…. Overall, I would also say that this is the beginning of a new chapter in the life of youth ministry in the diocese of Spokane.”
The 2013 CYC was organized by a volunteer team of nearly 20 people, with special thanks due to Shannon Sicilia, youth minister at St. Joseph Parish, Colbert, and Jeanette Benson, youth minister of Sacred Heart and St. Augustine parishes in Spokane, and St. Mary in Spokane Valley.
Next year’s CYC is already being organized, tentatively scheduled for March 2014.
