On Saturday, May 4, the St. Francis Fraternity of Spokane and the Franciscan Emerging Community of Deer Park held the Rite of Profession of eight candidates to the Secular Franciscan Order (SFO).

The profession ceremony and Mass were celebrated at Spokane’s St. Francis of Assisi Parish Church. Franciscan Father Michael Blackburn presided at the Mass.

Also assisting at the ceremony were Sister Patricia Gordon of the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration, who serves as Spiritual Assistant to the group, and SFOs Dennis Daniel acting Minister and Gail Robasciotti, acting Minister and Formation Director, respectively.

The Fraternities of the Secular Franciscans (SFOs) were established by St. Francis of Assisi over 800 years ago. They are a laity order, canonically established and are under the pastoral care and spiritual assistance of the Holy See.

Secular Franciscans are laity who feel a desire to deepen their Christian life of faith by living out the spirit of the Beatitudes and the Rule of life as set down by St. Francis and the Holy See.

After a 36-month formation process, their permanent commitment to the Gospel life, publicly proclaimed, reminds them of something which is made present every day in the Eucharist: after the example of Christ and in union with His own act of thanksgiving, they present themselves before the Father as living sacrifices of praise given for the life of the world.

Gathering monthly in fraternities, the brothers and sisters strive for ongoing daily conversion, to be faithful to the Gospel, and help one another on their journey, moving closer to Christ, following in the footsteps of St. Francis and St. Clare.
