Spokane’s St. Thomas More School students, in conjunction with Spokane Catholic Charities, were able to participate in a new program where students have become “Secret Saints” during this 2012-2013 school year.
Each class has become actively connected to a group of people in need in various Catholic Charities programs. Throughout the year, the students have participated in age-appropriate service learning activities. They have lived the concept of service without self this year in various ways.
This year the Kindergarten, 5th and 6th graders have all worked closely with St. Anne’s Children and Family Center, making decorations or cards for the children there, working with the children in person, or doing light cleaning around the building.
First graders have enjoyed being pen pals with Foster grandparents from Senior Services. Second grade has offered assistance to CAPA through diaper and wipe drives, and by writing “Prayers for Pregnant Mommies.” They also decorated cookies for those attending parenting classes offered through CAPA.
Third graders have decorated brown bags, collected food to put in the bags, and delivered the food to low-income, disabled and shut-in senior citizens.
St. Margaret’s Shelter was the setting for the fourth grade Secret Saints projects: The class traveled to St. Margaret’s and implemented several themed parties throughout the year.
Finally, 7th and 8th graders visited the House of Charity several times to help prepare and serve lunch and help with laundry.
During the month of May, each class will have a chance to “reveal” themselves to those they are helping.
