Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is giving the students at Pasco’s St. Patrick School a lesson in generosity. The Richland-based lab donated 45 Dell desktop computers to the school. The PCs will replace every computer currently in use by staff, teachers and students at the K-8 school.

“You can’t put a price on the value of this donation,” said St. Patrick’s principal, Bob Ludwikoski.

The donation comes from PNNL’s Excess Material and Redeployment Services.

The computers the school will replace are not headed to the dumpster. The PCs will be reconditioned to provide computers in individual classrooms and to be given to families who do not have a computer at home.

“Learning doesn’t stop when the school day ends,” Ludwikoski said. “Students who have access to computers at home will perform better at school and have a leg up on being successful at every educational level.”

Staff at St. Patrick began installing the new computers after the school year ended on May 31.

The new computers create another need: St. Patrick School is asking for donations of flat panel computer monitors to replace the existing CRT monitors. “The monitors are old, failing, and it’s getting harder and harder to keep them running,” said Ludwikoski.

Registration continues for new and returning students for the 2013-14 school year, which begins on Aug. 22.
