As the 2012-13 fiscal year rolled to a close, it was evident that many parishes have been supportive of the diocesan mission in the highlands of Guatemala. Including participation in all programs, a total of 21 parishes and schools and many individuals contributed financially to help the very poor in the Diocese of Sololá.
Thanks to generous donors, the Diocesan Guatemala Commission has met its budget for the fiscal year. Commitments have been honored to support religious, educational, health, economic and social programs. An increase of 5 percent is included in the 2013-14 budget due to inflation in Guatemala. The Commission is asking all parishes and individuals to keep this increase in mind as they offer assistance this year.
Donations for religious programs came from all corners of the diocese: St. Patrick Parish in Pasco; St. Mary’s Presentation Parish in Deer Park; Assumption, St. Francis of Assisi, and St. Patrick parishes in Walla Walla; St. Patrick in Spokane; and the Knights of Columbus Council of St. Mary Parish, Spokane Valley.
Support for educational programs came from St. Augustine Parish in Spokane; Assumption School in Walla Walla; St. Mary School, Spokane Valley; St. Joseph Parish, Colbert; and St. Patrick and St. Francis of Assisi parishes in Walla Walla.
Helping with the Medical Clinics and support for Dr. José Miguel Vasquez were St. Mary Parish, Spokane Valley; the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes, Spokane; St. Mary of the Rosary Parish, Chewelah; Holy Ghost Parish, Valley; and Sacred Heart Parish, Springdale.
Economic and social programs were made possible by assistance from Sacred Heart Parish, Pullman; St. Joseph Parish, Colbert; and St. Patrick and St. Francis of Assisi parishes in Walla Walla.
Contributions from Assumption Parish, Spokane, are unrestricted and used to complete budgeted commitments in a variety of programs.
The November Earthquake Relief Fund of $10,740 included contributions from St. Joseph Parish in Colbert, St. Patrick Parish in Walla Walla, Sacred Heart Parish in Spokane, Pomeroy’s Holy Rosary Parish, the altar society of St. Paul Parish in Eltopia, and many generous individuals.
In addition, St. Thomas More and Our Lady of Fatima parishes, both in Spokane, operate programs separate yet harmonious with the Guatemala Commission programs.
The Guatemala Commission would like to sincerely thank everyone for their most generous contributions and prayers, helping the indigenous poor in the Highlands of Guatemala. Additional donations can be sent to: Guatemala Mission, P.O. Box 1453, Spokane, WA 99210.
