the Inland Register
(From the October 17, 2013 edition of the Inland Register)
Father Patrick Baraza (left), who has been teaching and ministering in Spokane since 2005, is now a priest of this diocese,
In a note dated Oct. 4, Bishop Cupich announced that Bishop Maurice Crowley of the Diocese of Kitale, Kenya, granted excardination to Father Baraza, and that the priest had been incardinated as a member of the Spokane Diocese.
Diocesan priests are ordained to serve and belong to a specific diocese. With the permission of the bishops involved, they can move to another diocese and become one of its priests.
Father Baraza is a native of Kenya and was ordained to the priesthood Sept. 25, 1982.
He came to the United States in 1993, for doctoral studies at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, Calif.
His ministry has included teaching at a seminary in his native Kenya, and as a member of the Religious Studies Department of Gonzaga University.
Father Baraza also has taught at Eastern Washington University, Cheney, and Spokane Community College.
In 2011 he was named pastor of St. Ann Parish, Spokane, while being in residence at Bishop White Seminary.
