Immaculate Heart Retreat Center, Spokane, will host an Advent Day of Prayer titled “Mary’s Joyful Advent Heart (Luke 2): What’s the Secret?” on Wednesday, Dec. 4, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

The day will be under the leadership of Sister Mary Eucharista Mazurik of the Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Church.

“Mary’s Joyful Advent Heart” begins with recitation of the rosary at 9 a.m., and continues with two conferences, lunch, the sacrament of reconciliation, and Mass. The day concludes with Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.

Cost of the day is $35/person ($45 for those who wish a private room for the day), and includes lunch.

Sister Mary Eucharista is a member of IHRC’s programming staff and has a background in teaching, spiritual direction, and leading retreats.

• “The Spirituality of Making Amends” is the theme of IHRC’s semi-annual Serenity Retreat, Friday-Sunday, Dec. 6-8, under the leadership of Benedictine Sister Julie Wokasch.

Making amends is more than apologizing; rather, it is the follow-up of the drastic self-appraisal that must occur if the brokenness of addiction is to be mended. How can one minister to her or his spirit during these important steps? One way is to learn about the Discernment Process, reaching out to those one has offended. Join a group of dedicated seekers of Serenity to gain a spirit of making amends. Past participants as well as newcomers are most welcome.

The weekend begins after dinner on Friday at 6 p.m. and extends through lunch on Sunday. Retreat cost is $185 for singles or $280 for couples; $100 for commuters. Early registration is recommended; some scholarships are available.

• Also during the season of Advent, IHRC will host a weekend Ignatian retreat, “Advent and the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius,” led by Jesuit Father Armand Nigro, Friday-Sunday, Dec. 20-22.

The retreat includes guidance on the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola, private spiritual direction, and celebration of the sacraments, including Mass. Also included are Eucharistic adoration and quiet time for contemplation, writing, thinking, meditation, and prayer.

Father Nigro has been a priest for over 55 years. He was born and raised in Spokane and educated in Rome, where he earned his doctorate from the Gregorian University. He taught at Seattle University and Gonzaga University and served as a missionary in Africa and Alaska.

The weekend begins after dinner on Friday at 6 p.m. and concludes with lunch on Sunday. Retreat cost is $185 for singles or $280 for couples, and $100 for commuters.
