On Dec. 11, the eve of the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Father Lucas Tomson, pastor of Our Lady of the Valley Parish, Okanogan, blessed the pictured image of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
The parish commissioned the icon from Marek Czarnecki of Seraphic Restoration. Czarnecki’s icon of “Christ the High Priest” was used by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops as the graphic representation of the “Year of the Priest.”
Said Czarnecki, “The outside of the box is stained a brown mahogany, the inside is painted a deep brownish red. I also gilded the border/frame with 23 kt gold,” the same gold used in the gold leaf for the mandorla of rays, the stars, and the gold decorations on Our Lady’s tunic. “In general, it feels very bright, clean and festive,” he said.
According to Father Tomson, “The image is unique. The painted cloth (of the icon) is encased in a wooden box. Roses are gathered at the bottom of the image. Thus, it is an icon of the event, when St. Juan Diego let down his cloak in the presence of the bishop.”
