Catholic Men’s Conference set for Saturday, March 8
the Inland Register
(From the January 16, 2014 edition of the Inland Register)
For the “Hearts on Fire” men’s Tuesday morning prayer group, the new year holds great promise.
Building on the blessing of the past two years, the group has announced the date, place and speaker for its third annual Catholic Men’s Conference: Saturday, March 8, from 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m., returning to the Student Chapel on the third floor of Gonzaga University’s College Hall.
A deacon from the Archdiocese of Detroit, Deacon Alex Jones, has been selected as this year’s conference speaker.
Deacon Jones, known nationally as an inspirational and challenging speaker, originally was senior minister of Zion Congregational Church of God in Christ (1975-1982) and Maranatha Christian Church (1982-2000), both in the city of Detroit. A course of study in 1988 began an increasingly enlightening journey of faith for Deacon Jones and his wife, Donna. Their spiritual trek culminated in their full initiation in the Catholic Church in April 2001. Eventually 54 members of Deacon Jones’s previous congregation, including 14 family members, were to follow. His book, titled No Price Too High, chronicles his faith journey.
Deacon Jones was ordained a deacon in 2005. In addition to being engaged in ministry at his home parish, he has served the Archdiocese of Detroit as coordinator of evangelization. In July 2013, he retired from his parish ministries and set out on the speaking circuit.
In titling the conference “Living the Gospel with Boldness,” organizers hope to build on similar gatherings held the past two years in the same venue. This year’s conference will offer practical guidance for men in living their Catholic Faith as well as to exhort them to identify and apply for the good of others the gift of being Catholic men. Organizers have asked Deacon Jones to weave his personal testimony into his presentations as he calls attendees to spiritual discernment and openness to growth and evangelization.
The conference schedule calls for Deacon Jones to make three major presentations. Attendees will be given the opportunity to gather in groups for prayer, reflection and discussion. The conference will close with the celebration of the Eucharist, presided over by Bishop William S. Skylstad, Bishop Emeritus of the Spokane Diocese.
Pre-registration is $30 per person before March 1; registration is $40 at the door. (Financial assistance is available.) Lunch and conference materials are included.
