Our Lady of Fatima Parish’s Guatemala Committee hosts spring ‘textile drive’ April 27

(From the March 20, 2014 edition of the Inland Register)

Since 2005, the Guatemala Mission Committee of Our Lady of Fatima Parish, Spokane, has been concentrating their efforts on education for the Mayan students in the Diocese of Sololá. Great strides have been achieved thanks to the generous contributions of Our Lady of Fatima parishioners. Some of the projects and locations supported include:

• New Ixtahuacán, where the Committee has helped to provide furnishings for two preschool rooms, a breakfast program for the preschoolers, and musical instruments for the older children.
• The town of Novillero has a preschool, Our Lady of the Highway, which was begun by the Sisters of Charity of New York. Other Spokane Diocesan parishes help with teacher salaries while Our Lady of Fatima parishioners sponsors the breakfast program.
• In Solalá, the minor seminary – equivalent to high school in the United States – receives a contribution for those young men who might consider the priesthood.
• Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Girls School in San Andres Semetabaj is where the majority of the group’s funding has been directed, providing scholarships to young Mayan girls who are attending this boarding school.

The committee continues to examine means and ways to increase available funding. One project is taking place Sunday, April 27: a “Textile Drive” from noon-1 p.m. in front of the parish church, 1517 E. 33rd Ave. in Spokane.

Donations are cheerfully accepted for a variety of goods, including shoes and boots (both athletic shoes and leather), sheets, blankets, quilts and bedspreads (any condition), towels (bath, kitchen and rags, too), curtains and draperies, throw rugs (no carpet), pet beds, purses and belts (synthetic or leather), stuffed animals, tablecloths and placemats, duffel bags and backpacks and clothing in any condition.

Sorry: no glass, breakables, bed pillows, or electronics.

Donations should be placed in large garbage bags (the heavier the bag, the better). The donations will earn 15 cents per pound for the Committee to dedicate to supporting ministry in Guatemala.

For more information and/or pick-up, call Rochelle Eden at 217-5074 or Virginia Wallace at 448-5167. Or bring bags of donations to the church parking lot on Sunday, April 27.
