Dominican Sisters celebrate jubilees of profession

Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa with ties to the Church in Eastern Washington are celebrating jubilees of profession.
Sister Alberta Nett marks 75 years; Sister Ellen Shannon, 70 years; Mary Jane Para, 60 years; and Sister Judith Nilles, 50 years.
Sister Alberta Nett will celebrate her 75th jubilee in June. A Mass honoring the jubilarians will be celebrated in Queen of the Rosary Chapel at Sinsinawa Mound, Wis., on Sunday, June 8.
Sister Alberta’s home parish is St. Mary of the Rosary, Chewelah. She is the daughter of the late Jakob and Margareta (Kuntz) Nett.
Sister Alberta’s ministry has been dedicated to health care and hospital administration.
She ministered at St. Joseph Hospital, Chewelah, as a nurse and administrator, 1955-1960; in purchasing, 1979-1990; and in pastoral care, 1990-1995. She served as a nurse at Holy Family Home, Spokane, 1960-1962; as a provincial for the Spokane Dominican Congregation (now merged with the Sinsinawa Dominicans), Kettle Falls, 1962-1968, and Spokane, 1968-1970; as a nurse at St. Mary Hospital, Chewelah, 1970; and in pastoral care at Mt. Carmel Hospital, Colville, 1990-1995. She has also ministered in Montana.
Sister Alberta is now living in community in Chewelah.
Sister Ellen (Moise) Shannon will celebrate her 70th jubilee next month as well. She, too, will be among the jubilarians honored at the June 8 Mass at Sinsinawa Mound.
Sister Ellen’s home parish is St. Jerome, Oconomowoc, in the Milwaukee Archdiocese. She is the daughter of the late Aloysius and Lucia (Lane) Shannon. Sister Ellen’s ministry has been dedicated to education and pastoral care.
In the Diocese of Spokane, Sister Ellen served as convent coordinator at Dominican Center, Spokane, 1994-1997.
She has also ministered in Oklahoma, Minnesota, South Dakota, Montana, Wisconsin, and in the Chicago Archdiocese.
Sister Ellen is living in community at the motherhouse, Sinsinawa.
Sister Mary Jane Para will celebrate her 60th jubilee in June 2014. A Mass will be celebrated in Queen of the Rosary Chapel at Sinsinawa Mound on Sunday, June 8, for her and 21 other Sinsinawa Dominican Sisters celebrating 60 years.
Sister Mary Jane’s home parish is Sacred Heart, Othello. She is the daughter of the late John and Catharine (Tomatis) Para. Sister Mary Jane’s ministry has been dedicated to bookkeeping.
She ministered as an office worker at Sisters’ motherhouse in Kettle Falls, 1954-1964; as cashier at Holy Family Hospital, Spokane, 1964-1977; as provincialate and office worker at Holy Family Convent, Spokane, 1977-1983; and bookkeeper at the Dominican Center, Spokane, 1983-2005.
Currently Sister Mary Jane is living in community at St. Dominic Villa, Sinsinawa, Wis.
Sister Judith Nilles celebrates her 50th jubilee of profession in July of this year. She and other Sisters celebrating 50 years will be honored during Mass celebrated in Queen of the Rosary Chapel in Sinsinawa, Wis., on Sunday, July 13.
Sister Judith’s home parish is St. Mary of the Rosary, Chewelah. She is the daughter of the late William and Helen (Schmidlkofer) Nilles. Sister Judith’s ministry has been dedicated to leadership and pastoral ministry.
In the Diocese of Spokane, Sister Judith ministered at St. Thomas More School, Spokane, as teacher (1967-1970 and 1971-1974) and as principal (1974-1979). In 1970-71 she was a teacher at Assumption School, Spokane.
She served in congregation leadership for the Dominican Sisters of Spokane, now merged with the Sinsinawa Dominicans, as provincial, 1979-1986, and as prioress, 1986-1995.
She was a pastoral minister at St. Mary of the Rosary Parish, Chewelah, 1998-2004; director of parish services for the Diocese of Spokane, Spokane, 2004-2006; and pastoral associate at Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes, Spokane, 2007-2011. She has been ministering as secretary and service representative for Catholic Funeral and Cemetery Services of Spokane since 2012.
