Taking a major step toward the implementation of the diocese’s Know, Love and Serve (KLS) pastoral planning initiative, Bishop Cupich has announced the creation of a new position in the ranks of diocesan administration.
Effective July 1, Parish Support and Renewal Services will be staffed full-time by Brian Kraut, currently Pastoral Associate/Youth Minister at St. Pius X Parish in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.
The new position will be funded by grant monies the diocese has received for the KLS initiative.
KLS, which has engaged all the parishes of the diocese and multiple Catholic entities for the past two years, will itself receive direction in the form of a soon-to-be published pastoral letter written by Bishop Cupich. Guided by the recommendations KLS Leadership Summit April 11-12 at Immaculate Heart Retreat Center, the letter will set goals and strategies for all the parishes and Catholic entities to implement over the next five years.
In making the announcement of Kraut’s position to the priests of the diocese, the bishop wrote, “On earlier occasions I indicated that for the Know, Love and Serve process to maintain its energy, momentum and focus we needed to provide support for the parishes. This became even clearer during the recent Leadership Summit, which as you know was an important moment in launching the renewal we envisioned in our original decision to invest in KLS.”
Bishop Cupich wrote that Kraut is well-equipped for the task.
“His many years in pastoral and diocesan work will enable him to match needs and resources in order to foster the ministerial life and vitality of our parish communities,” said Bishop Cupich. “He is well known in the Diocese of Boise for his ability to organize events and motivate people to put their faith into action. His years in youth and sacramental prep ministry will help us meet the faith development needs of the children, youth and young adults in our parish communities.”
Kraut has been the Pastoral Associate/Youth Minister at St. Pius X Parish in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, for the past 21 years. He also teaches at Holy Family School in Coeur d’Alene.
He is well known to the Catholic Community in Northern Idaho – and to several parish ministers in the Diocese of Spokane – for his workshop presentations, retreat work, organization of conventions, faith formation of children and families, and ministry to youth and young adults. He also has served on advisory councils for the Diocese of Boise and has spearheaded collaborative ministry with the Coeur d’Alene Tribe.
Kraut and his wife, Susie, are parents to five children, the older of which have attended or are attending Gonzaga Prep in Spokane.
He was born and raised in the Palouse, where his family homesteaded and helped found St. Boniface Parish in Uniontown. Living now in nearby Post Falls, he is familiar with the Diocese of Spokane and has followed its KLS process with interest.
In a letter accepting the position, Kraut wrote: “I am humbled and filled with the joy of Christ to be granted this opportunity to serve the Diocese of Spokane.”
