Guatemala Mission celebration: ‘Responding to Pope Francis’

Bishop Cupich visited the Guatemala Mission last February, including time with two of the Sisters of Charity of New York who serve there: Sisters Immaculata Burke (left) and Marie Tolle. More than 125 people from parishes around the diocese gathered at Barrister Winery in downtown Spokane on Wednesday, May 21, to celebrate 55 years of partnership with the faithful people of the highlands of Guatemala at the Annual Guatemala Mission Celebration. Theme for the evening event was “Responding to Pope Francis: How Spokane Diocese parishioners are partnering with the poor in Guatemala.”

Featured speakers were Bishop Blase Cupich, who visited the mission last February, and Father David Baronti, priest in the mission for 39 years.

Father Baronti was presented with a grant of $2,000 from the Spokane Aurora NW Rotary Club for upgrades to the fish hatchery in Ixtahuacán, Guatemala.

Jerry and Clara Monks, of St. Thomas More Parish, were honored for their 30 years of work with Family-to-Family, which they began in 1984. That ministry pairs families in the United States with families in Guatemala for short-term financial support aimed toward improving the Guatemala family’s self-sufficiency.

Several members of the Fatima Guatemala Committee talked about the schools which they support and which several visited on a recent trip.

A special tribute, with photos, was made to Sister Immaculata Burke of the Sisters of Charity of New York, for her 43 years of service as nurse, midwife, and administrator of the four medical clinics. Sister Immaculata passed away March 8 of this year.
