Bountiful expressions of diverse community at Thanksgiving Day Mass

the Inland Register

(From the December 18, 2014 edition of the Inland Register)

Beginning with the Thanksgiving Mass of November 2004, a colorful and vibrant liturgy has been celebrated each year at St. Joseph Parish on Dean Avenue in Spokane.

St. Joseph Parish and St. Anthony Parish not only share a pastor, they each include diverse congregations with different ethnic groups. Sunday at St. Joseph includes a Mass in Spanish and Vietnamese is included at St. Anthony.

On Thanksgiving, both parishes come together to give thanks for the many blessings of this land, bringing food to be given to Our Place, a community assistance agency supported by congregations of several denominations. They remember the first Thanksgiving as they recognize the assistance given to the pilgrims by the Native Americans. The liturgy includes readings and music in English, Spanish and Vietnamese. Ethnic finger foods are served in the parish hall, allowing social time between the members of the parishes prior to each family’s leaving for larger dinners in their homes.
