Deacon Steve Prawdzik, ordained a deacon for the Spokane Diocese on June 24, 1999, has retired from active ministry, effective Oct. 15.
“Your varied and rich experience has brought many graces to people,” wrote Archbishop Blase Cupich in a letter accepting Deacon Prawdzik’s retirement. “I want you to know of my thanks,” wrote the archbishop.
Deacon Prawdzik was ordained a deacon for the Spokane Diocese by Bishop William Skylstad at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes after a three-and-a-half-year formation program.
His ministerial activities included many years of service as the chaplain for Catholic Scouting in the diocese, Handicapped Encounter Christ, and Hospice of Spokane, as well as ministry at St. Peter Parish, Spokane, and Holy Family Community at Fairchild Air Force Base.
Deacon Prawdzik spent 29 years in the Air Force. He began his military career as an Airman Basic during the Vietnam War and retired in 1997 with the rank of major.
He was born in Camden, N.J., but grew up in Hollywood, Fla. He holds degrees from the University of Florida and Texas A&M.
The Prawdziks moved to Spokane in 1992.
