On Saturday, Feb. 28, the Deer Park Emerging Community of the St. Francis Fraternity of Spokane joyfully announced the Rite of Profession of five candidates to the Order of Franciscans Secular.

The profession ceremony and Mass were celebrated at St. Mary Presentation Parish in Deer Park. Franciscan Father Michael Blackburn presided.

Also assisting at the ceremony were several other Secular Franciscans: Paula Bacon, leader of Deer Park community; Dennis Daniel, Minister of the Spokane Fraternity; Annette Roy, Formation Director of the Deer Park community; and Gail Robasciotti.

The Fraternities of the Secular Franciscans were established by St. Francis of Assisi over 800 years ago. They are a lay order, canonically established, and under the pastoral care and spiritual assistance of the Holy See.

Secular Franciscans are dynamic lay people who feel a desire to deepen their Christian life of faith by living out the spirit of the Beatitudes and their Rule of life as set down by St. Francis and the Holy See.

After a 27 month formation, their permanent commitment to the Gospel life, publicly proclaimed, reminds them of something which is made present every day in the Eucharist: after the example of Christ and in union with his own act of thanksgiving, they present themselves before the Father as living sacrifices of praise given for the life of the world.

Gathering monthly in fraternities the brothers and sisters, led by the Holy Spirit and Godís grace, strive for ongoing daily conversion, to be faithful to the Gospel and help one another on their journey, moving closer to Christ, following in the footsteps of St. Francis and St. Clare. Their secular state is an instrument through which they contribute to the building up of the Kingdom of God.

(Those interested in learning more about the Secular Franciscans are invited to attend a meeting; the Deer Park Emerging Community meets the fourth Saturday of each month at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Presentation Parish, 606 E 6th St. in Deer Park.
