Hundreds take part in 2015 Catholic Youth Celebration
the Inland Register
(From the April 16, 2015 edition of the Inland Register)
“An awesome way for everyone to enter, recharge, and build upon faith.”
These comments were commonplace as young people departed for home following a full, action-packed weekend at CYC 2015 the weekend of March 20-22.
Young people from 27 parishes arrived at Gonzaga Prep, Spokane. They came ready to encounter their faith in new ways.
These youth and their chaperones shared the weekend with the Thirsting, a Catholic band featuring Daniel Oberreuter, in a return performance after CYC 2014. Saturday night the band concluded the evening with a concert of songs from their albums Universal Youth and Companions of the Lamb.
Keynote speaker was Padre Jorge Zarraga, a priest of the Missionaries of Jesus and Mary from Tijuana, Mexico. Father Zarraga encouraged young people to behold Jesus throughout the weekend and challenged the crowd to participate in the Sacrament of Reconciliation and so experience the fullness of God’s love for them. He inspired all as he spoke of a Eucharistic miracle that has been studied in Mexico, which led into Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament for CYC participants.
A group of student leaders, “the Souldiers,” generously served all in attendance, performing menial tasks with unheralded joy and boldly proclaiming their faith through their lives and actions. They prepared and shared a living Stations of the Cross from the perspective of the Blessed Mother that brought many to tears as they connected with Jesus and Mary.
Five “Souldiers” came dressed and ready to share the lives of St. Maria Goretti, Blessed Mother Teresa, St. Padre Pio, St. Maximillian Kolbe, and St. Juan Diego.
Mass was the high point of the weekend. Father Zarraga concelebrated with Fathers Tyler Smedley and Paul Heric of the Spokane Diocese. Prayers were offered for those discerning vocations to the priesthood, Religious life, and marriage. Young people were commissioned to go out into the world.
Applications for youth leadership are available now, for young people who want to grow in faith and help with Diocesan Events; email Jeannette Benson (email@example.com) or Brian Kraut (firstname.lastname@example.org).

The first of the Stations of the Cross, Jesus is condemned to death,” as presented by the “Souldiers,” the Diocesan Youth Leadership team.
“Souldiers” share a presentation on the rosary, passionately encouraging their peers to pray this devotion with them and the church, by stating “I Pray the Rosary!”
