May IHRC retreat seeks to strengthen families, marriages
the Inland Register
(From the May 21, 2015 edition of the Inland Register)
Immaculate Heart Retreat Center (IHRC), Spokane, will conclude May with a marriage/parenting retreat titled “You’re Not Alone: Keeping Your Kids Safe and Strong in a Secure and Faithful Marriage,” under the leadership of Father David Kuttner.
The retreat is scheduled for Friday-Sunday, May 29-31.
Father Kuttner will share and explore how to overcome the pressures of society on families by changing how marriage partners see each other. How can parents help children deal with social media, the practice of the Faith, and other aspects of modern life?
Father Kuttner is the pastor of the parishes in Tekoa and Oakesdale, and serves as a spiritual director at IHRC.
Cost of the retreat is $192 per person, $294 per couple, and $107 for commuters.
• On Wednesday, June 3, IHRC will host a Day of Prayer on the Mass titled “The Source and Summit (Lumen Gentium),” led by Mother Kathryn Joseph Duddy and Sister Mary Elizabeth Earp of the Sisters of Mary Mother of the Church, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
This Day of Prayer is designed to give participants keys to open understanding of the transcendent event that is Mass.
The day begins with recitation of the rosary at 9 a.m. It includes two conferences, lunch, the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and Mass, and concludes with Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Cost is $37 per person, which includes lunch, or $47 with use of a private room for the day.
• The following weekend, June 5-7, IHRC hosts a Serenity 12-Step Retreat titled “Meditations on Recovery: The Twelve Steps as Spiritual Practice.”
Leading the retreat will be Father Thomas Haffey of the Diocese of Helena, Mont.
Father Haffey brings in the Jewish and Eastern spiritualties of Rami Shapiro to traditional 12-Step considerations, unfolding rich reflection in the key 12-stop concept of “God as you understand him.” The retreat will give opportunity for those concerned with alcoholism and addiction to experience their need for God as they continue their journey of recovery and healing.
Father Haffey attended seminary in Dubuque, Iowa, and completed an MA in theology in 1969. He was ordained by Bishop Hunthausen that year for the Diocese of Helena.
Assignments have included ministry in Browning, Hamilton, Butte Religious Education Center, Anaconda, Montana State University (Bozeman) campus ministry, and Conrad, as well as the last 17 years as pastor of St. Ann Parish, Butte. He has conducted Serenity Retreats since the mid-1980s and has been active in 12-step recovery for 31 years.
Cost of the retreat is $192 per person, $294 per couple, or $107 for commuters.
