Catholic Scouts have opportunities for achievement

by Deacon Dan Glatt, for the Inland Register

(From the May 21, 2015 edition of the Inland Register)

The end of the school year, fast approaching, is a good time to think about working on Catholic Scouting Awards for this summer, especially our elementary-school-age Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. Summer can be a great opportunity for Scouts in grades 1-4 to make some real progress toward earning these awards.

There are two awards available for both the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts at this age level.

For the Cub Scouts at the Tiger Scout and Wolf level there is the “Light of Christ” emblem. The goal of the Light of Christ is to help the Cub Scout develop a personal relationship with Jesus. With the help of the parents, the Cub Scout will come to see Jesus as a real person and his friend.

Bear and Webelos Cub Scouts can earn their “Parvuli Dei” (Children of God) emblem. The goal of the Parvuli Dei emblem program is to help these older Cub Scouts to explore a wide range of activities in order to discover the presence of God in their daily lives as members of their families and parishes.

Workbooks for the Boy Scouts Catholic Religious Emblems are available from the local Boy Scout Service Centers. You can find these Service Centers in Spokane, Clarkston, and Kennewick, Wash., and Hayden, Idaho. The cost is $4.99 each.

For our younger Girl Scouts and Camp Fire Boys and Girls in grades 2 and 3, there is the “Family of God” program, which helps children discover the presence of God in their daily lives as member of their family and parish.

Girl Scouts and Camp Fire Boys and Girls in grades 4-6 can earn their “I Live My Faith” award. The goal of this award program is to appreciate more deeply the place that God and religion occupy in daily life. The program will look at a variety of themes, including Belief, Sacraments, Catholic Christian Living and Prayer. Each of them provides a variety of opportunities for young people to explore the Catholic faith including art, technology, research, drama, and prayer.

All resources for the Girl Scout and Camp Fire Boys and Girls are available through the Diocese Committee for Catholic Scouting. The cost of the “Family of God” and “I Live My Faith” are $6 and can be purchased by calling me at Our Lady of Fatima – (509) 747-7213 – or by emailing me at dccs@dioceseofspokane.org. Questions about the variety of awards for Catholic Scouting from elementary grades through high school? Send me an email or give me a call.
