IHRC retreat to focus on Byzantine iconography next month
the Inland Register
(From the June 18, 2015 edition of the Inland Register)
Immaculate Heart Retreat Center (IHRC), Spokane, offers a seven-day icon-writing retreat/workshop from Saturday, July 11, at 4:30 p.m. to Friday, July 17, at 10:30 a.m. Leading the retreat, “Byzantine Iconography – Visions of Light and Glory,” will be Father Damian Higgins.
During the retreat, Father Higgins will guide retreatants through this particular prayer process. “The importance is in the process,” he says. “We are careful how we use materials, that are also all-natural and organic. This brings closeness to the earth and respect for all things of the earth as well as to the sanctified person whose image we are creating.”
Comfortable clothing is advised. The cost of all materials is included. No prior art experience is needed; however, space is limited. A deposit of $100 is required in advance; total cost is $650, which includes supplies.
• Bishop William Skylstad, Bishop Emeritus of the Spokane Diocese, will be hosting barbecues at IHRC on Tuesday, July 17, and Tuesday, Aug. 25, from 5-8 p.m.
The meals offer an opportunity to connect with the bishop, who will give a short talk during dessert and coffee.
Bishop Skylstad was originally ordained as a priest of the Spokane Diocese, where he served in various roles prior to his appointment as Bishop of Yakima in 1977. He returned to Eastern Washington as administrator of the Spokane Diocese in 1989 and was named bishop in 1990. He ministered in that role until the appointment of Bishop Blase Cupich as Bishop of Spokane in 2010.
Cost for the event is $20 per person. Please register in advance.
• IHRC will host an eight-day silent Ignatian retreat next month, under the direction of Jesuit Father Alan Yost.
“Praying and Contemplating in the Ignatian Way” is scheduled for Monday, July 20, through Monday, July 27. The retreat begins July 20 with 4:30 p.m. registration and concludes at 1 p.m. on July 27.
Retreatants will learn and engage in contemplation and prayer in a silent retreat, following the model of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus. The retreat will include conferences on discernment, explaining the work of the Holy Spirit. Spiritual direction will be available.
Father Yost has been a member of the Oregon Province of the Society of Jesus since 1998. He holds a master’s degree in writing and publishing from Emerson College in Boston and two masters’ in theology from Weston Jesuit School of Theology. He currently serves as university minister at Gonzaga University, coordinating the contemplative retreat, spiritual direction, and the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) for the university.
Cost $656, overnight with meals; commuters, $54/day.
• Father Robert McNeese, a recently retired priest of the Spokane Diocese, will lead a silent day of prayer on Pope Francis’s apostolic exhortation Evangelium Gaudii (“The Joy of the Gospel”) titled “Pope Francis’s Message: Hope and Joy,” on Tuesday, July 28, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at IHRC.
Through the pope’s work, “The Joy of the Gospel,” Father McNeese will direct participants to ponder the simplicity, beauty and practice of this message of spreading the Good News of the Gospel.
Father McNeese recently retired after serving most recently as rector of Bishop White Seminary, Spokane, and the diocese’s Director of Vocations. He taught at Blanchet High School in Seattle for over 30 years prior to his ordination to priesthood. He has also been pastor of St. Augustine Parish, Spokane, and the parishes in Colville, Kettle Falls, and Northport.
The Day of Prayer begins with recitation of the rosary at 9 a.m. The day includes two conferences, lunch, the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and Mass, and then closes with Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Cost is $37 per person ($47 with use of a private room for the day). Please register in advance.
