Dr. Robert J. McCann, Executive Director of Catholic Charities Spokane, has been elected to the National Board of Trustees of Catholic Charities USA (CCUSA). McCann was elected by the more than 160 Catholic Charities agency directors and the current members of the CCUSA Board of Trustees at their June meeting.

CCUSA is the national office for Catholic Charities agencies nationwide. Members provide help and create hope for millions of people every year, regardless of religious, social, or economic background. CCUSA provides leadership and support for the work of local agencies in their efforts to reduce poverty, support families, and empower communities. Catholic Charities offers service to people in need, advocates for justice in social structures, and calls the entire church and other people of good will to do the same.

This is not McCann’s first experience in a leadership role at the national level for the Catholic Church in the United States: In 2005 he was appointed to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ (USCCB) National Advisory Committee (NAC), a group of roughly 50 Catholics from around the country who meet several times a year to advise the nation’s bishops on a wide range of current topics related to the agendas of USCCB meetings. McCann was elected to the Chair role of the NAC, where he reported directly to the bishops at their gatherings, for the final three years of his seven-year tenure on the NAC.

“I am profoundly honored to be elected to the CCUSA Board of Trustees by my peers around the country,” said McCann. “I hope to bring the wisdom and innovation of Catholic Charities Spokane to the national stage and look forward to my work on this board.”

CCUSA and its local agencies employ more than 70,000 people across the country. For its part, Catholic Charities Spokane has roughly 300 employees, more than 6,000 volunteers, and an annual budget of $17 million. Over 77,000 different people are served each year by one of Catholic Charities Spokane’s 12 different programs and 900 units of housing.
