Explore Pope Francis’s ‘Joy of the Gospel’ at IHRC

Immaculate Heart Retreat Center (IHRC) will host a Silent Day of Prayer on Pope Francis’s apostolic exhortation Evangelium Gaudii (“The Joy of the Gospel”) titled, “Pope Francis’s Message: Hope and Joy,” led by Father Robert McNeese (right) on Tuesday, July 28, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

In taking a deeper look at The Joy of the Gospel, Father McNeese will direct participants to ponder the simplicity, beauty and practice of this message of spreading the Good News of the Gospel.

Father McNeese was ordained a priest of the Spokane Diocese on May 22, 1998. He was born and raised in Spokane and graduated from St. Aloysius, Gonzaga Prep, and Gonzaga University. Prior to beginning studies for the priesthood, he taught at Blanchet High School in Seattle for over 30 years. He did post-graduate work at Gonzaga, Seattle University, and completed his priestly formation at the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, Minn. Father McNeese first served as parochial vicar at St. Mary Parish, Spokane Valley, and most recently served as rector of Bishop White Seminary in Spokane. He was granted senior status on July 1 of this year.

The Day of Prayer begins with recitation of the rosary at 9 a.m. The day includes two conferences, lunch, the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and Mass, and closes with Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Cost: $37 per person, which includes lunch; $47 includes use of a private room for the day.

• A special mid-week event for seniors age 55 and older has been scheduled at IHRC on Thursday, Aug. 20, from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

During the “Summer Senior Day,” guests will enjoy lunch, social time, a performance by the Hillyard Belles, indoor games, and facility tours. Cost is $10 per person; individuals and groups are welcome. Advance registration is requested.

• IHRC offers an opportunity to chat with Spokane’s Bishop Emeritus, Bishop William Skylstad, while enjoying a barbecue dinner on Tuesday, Aug. 25, 5-8 p.m.

The evening will include dinner and Mass and a talk titled “The Family in the Modern World: the Challenges and the Opportunities.”

Besides his time as bishop of Spokane, Bishop Skylstad also served as bishop of Yakima. He was ordained as a priest of the Spokane Diocese.

Cost is $20/person.

• Jesus’ mother, Mary, will be the focus of a silent day of prayer led by Father David Kuttner (right) on Wednesday, Aug. 26, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at IHRC.

The day’s theme is “She Pondered All These Things in Her Heart (Luke 2).”

Father Kuttner is the pastor of the parishes in Tekoa and Oakesdale, and serves as spiritual director for IHRC.
