Enjoy barbecue with Bishop Skylstad this month at Immaculate Heart Retreat Center
the Inland Register
(From the August 20, 2015 edition of the Inland Register)
The summer barbecue season is in full swing throughout the Inland Northwest, and Immaculate Heart Retreat Center (IHRC) is no exception.
On Tuesday, Aug. 25, IHRC will host “Barbecue with Bishop Skylstad.” The evening begins with Mass at 5 p.m. and will conclude by 8 p.m.
Bishop Skylstad, Bishop Emeritus of the Spokane Diocese, will offer an informal talk on the topic of “The Family in the Modern World: the Challenges and the Opportunities.”
Bishop William Skylstad was ordained as a priest of the Spokane Diocese and served in several capacities here, including rector of Mater Cleri Seminary, prior to his appointment as Bishop of Yakima in 1977. He returned to the Spokane Diocese as bishop in 1990, until his retirement in 2010.
Cost for the event is $20 per person. Please register in advance.
• A Silent Day of Prayer focused on the Immaculate Heart of Mary is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 26, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
Father Joseph Sullivan (left), pastor of the parishes in Colton and Uniontown, will lead participants in contemplating the theme, “She Pondered All These Things in Her Heart” (Luke 2). As the model disciple, Mary would reflect and pray, asking God what was meant and what to do.
The day begins at 9 a.m. with recitation of the rosary. There will be two conferences, lunch, opportunity to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and Mass. The day will conclude with Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.
Cost (which includes lunch) is $37/person ($47 with use of a private room for the day). Advance registration is requested.
• IHRC’s Auxiliary has scheduled its 2015 card party and luncheon for Tuesday, Sept. 15, from noon-4 p.m.
The event will include lunch, cards and other games, prizes, and much more. Cost is $10/person; proceeds help support IHRC’s apostolate. Registration is requested by Sept. 4 by calling (509) 939-5539.
• “Coffee and Contemplation,” IHRC’s spiritual discussion and prayer series for people of all denominations, continues on Wednesday, Sept. 16, with “Living with Forgiving,” presented by teacher and counselor Charles Finck.
Forgiveness can be incredibly difficult, yet is absolutely necessary – both for those who have been hurt, and for those who have caused the hurt. The decision to forgive and bless opens an individual to God.
Charles F. Finck has been counseling and teaching for over 30 years. In 2001 he founded Liberty Cross Ministries. He specializes in individual and marriage and family counseling, and teaches nationally and internationally. His desire is to share the message of hope and healing in a relationship with Jesus Christ. He does this through seminars, schools, and Scripture-based prayer and counseling.
The program runs from 9-11 a.m. and includes warm beverages and rolls. Cost is $10 per session. Advance reservations are requested.
• Mid-September sees a weekend retreat specifically for empty nesters and retirees: “Fresh Invitations for Midlife and Beyond: Crossing the Threshold of Midlife with Grace,” conducted by author Mary Sharon Moore.
The weekend begins on Friday, Sept. 18, with registration at 6 p.m. and concludes Sunday, Sept. 20, at 1 p.m. after lunch.
When children leave home to build their own, independent lives, or retirement, are both times of significant transition that can provide an important opportunity to reflect on the next work God asks.
Moore is the author of Anointed for a Purpose and Moving in God’s Direction. Her work focuses on the urgency of connecting sacramental anointing with the needs of the 21st century world.
Cost of the weekend retreat is $192 per person/$294 for couples, overnight with meals; for commuters, $107.
