As part of its commitment to the Know, Love and Serve pastoral planning initiative, St. Paschal Parish in Spokane Valley will be sending a shipping container of assistance to a parish in the Republic of Gambia, West Africa.
St. Paschal’s parish council recently approved a request to send any and all items and materials no longer used or needed from the building that previously housed the parish’s now-closed school.
The opportunity to help St. Charles L’Wanga Parish in Gambia came as parishioners, headed by chair Irene Bailly, formed a committee to celebrate St. Paschal’s centennial next July, as well as the school’s 76th anniversary.
After members of the committee boxed up items and materials, Boy Scouts from the parish assisted in loading up the boxes for storage until the cost of shipping can be raised.
Christ’s Hands on Afrika is a non-profit organization located in Spokane Valley, headed by Charles and Kim Sonko. Charles was born and raised in Gambia, along with his brother, who recently traveled to West Africa to ensure the safe arrival of the container. The organization has $7,000 of the required $8,000 to ship the container, and hopes to finish fundraising in time to ship the goods for the fall school term.
