VOCARE 2015 was a great success. Held at the end of June, 12 different Congregations of Religious Women in Eastern Washington and Western Idaho worked together to provide this four-day vocational experience for young women age 13-18.
This repeat of past summer VOCARE programs saw half of the 45 participants returning for their second, third or fourth year.
There is a very good chance that most of the high school girls who came from the many regions of the Spokane Diocese and beyond may have never known a Sister, so VOCARE is designed to bring the girls (by bus) to the places where Sisters still minister, or sponsor, or have now handed on a ministry to vital laity who embody the Sisters’ charisms. The young women learned of these ministries, prayed with Sisters, and saw and experienced different community living situations.
Immaculate Heart Retreat Center was the hub for VOCARE. There, in the evenings, the girls experienced educational programs, Mass, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, morning and evening prayer, community activities, one-on-one conversations with Sisters of various Communities, and fun interaction with other like-minded girls. For the returning participants, the program was enriched with service projects and/or a full day retreat, as well as deeper education and discernment of a call to Religious life.
VOCARE 2015 was again possible because of faithful organizations and individuals who supplied meals, funds, and scholarships. Among the generous supporters were The Spokane Serra Club, Knights of Columbus, Catholic Daughters of the Americas, and The Home School Parents. Various parishes offered support in response to the goals of their projects arising from the Know, Love, and Serve pastoral planning initiative. The Catholic Foundation, The John Paul II Foundation, and generous individuals and businesses also provided support.
Sponsoring communities of women Religious were Benedictine Sisters; Carmelite Sisters; Dominican Sisters; Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration; Missionaries of Charity; Poor Clare Sisters; Providence Sisters; Sisters for Christian Community; Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary; Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Church; Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia; and the St. Joseph Sisters.
