Bishop Daly to open cathedral’s ‘Mercy Doors’ Sunday, Dec. 13
the Inland Register
(From the November 19, 2015 edition of the Inland Register)
“Jesus Christ is the face of the Father’s mercy.”
With these words, Pope Francis introduces the upcoming Year of Mercy, set to begin on Dec. 8, 2015, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception.
The pope fittingly designated this day, commemorating the conception of Mary, as the beginning of the Year of Mercy, for “It recalls God’s action from the very beginning of history of mankind. After the sin of Adam and Eve, God did not wish to leave humanity alone in the throes of evil. And so he turned his gaze to Mary, holy and immaculate in love … choosing her to be the Mother of man’s Redeemer.”
This outpouring of grace upon Mary from the very moment of her conception demonstrates that “When faced with the gravity of sin, God responds with the fullness of Mercy.”
The Church is the doorway to mercy. Reinforcing this will be the opening of the Holy Door at St. Peter Basilica, Vatican City, by Pope Francis on Dec. 8 – “through which anyone who enters will experience the love of God who consoles, pardons, and instills hope.”
He further instructed that every cathedral throughout the world similarly set aside a door as a designated “mercy door.” He instructed that these cathedral doors be opened the following Sunday, Dec. 13.
Bishop Daly will open the Mercy Doors at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes, Spokane, at the beginning of the 11 a.m. Mass on Sunday, Dec. 13. This event is for everyone in the diocese.
