Mary, the First Disciple Award

the Inland Register

(From the November 19, 2015 edition of the Inland Register)

The Diocese Committee for Catholic Scouting (DCCS) is pleased to announce the awarding of the “Mary, the First Disciple” award to Girl Scout Julia Albrecht, an eighth grader at All Saints School, Spokane. She is one of the first Girl Scouts in the Diocese of Spokane to earn the award. Starting in October 2014, Julia began to meet with Deacon Dan Glatt, June Sine, and Roseann Caruso, members of the Committee for Catholic Scouting, to work through the requirements of this award. “Mary, the First Disciple” is designed to help Girl Scouts in 7th-10th grades to learn more about the Blessed Mother and her life. The Scouts meet Mary through the Scripture and follow her journey to becoming the Mother of God. They explore the calling of Mary by the angel Gabriel and her response of saying “Yes.” They learn how their own “Yes” helps them learn about the importance of putting their trust in God. The DCCS encourages Girl Scouts to earn their Catholic religious awards, available from kindergarten through high school. For more information about the awards, email the DCCS at or call Deacon Dan Glatt at Our Lady of Fatima Parish, S pokane: (509) 747-7213.
