(From the April 21, 2016 edition of the Inland Register)

Mothers – both Mary, the Mother of God, and earthly mothers – are among the program emphases at Immaculate Heart Retreat Center (IHRC) next month.

• On Sunday, May 8, IHRC celebrates Mother’s Day 2016 with its 13th Annual Champagne Brunch. Event proceeds support IHRC’s retreat ministry.

The annual all-you-can-eat brunch includes carving stations, French toast, egg casserole, a variety of salads, fresh seasonal fruit, assorted cheeses, omelets-to-order, and extravagant dessert bar featuring fresh-baked cinnamon rolls, muffins, and house-made desserts including carrot and chocolate cakes, bread pudding with rum sauce and chocolate mousse cake.

In addition to brunch, Sunday Mass will be celebrated, beginning at 8 a.m. in the main chapel; the statue of the Blessed Mother will be crowned just before Mass.

Cost is $30 for adults and $10 for children ages 6 -12 at the door. Make reservations by calling IHRC – (509) 448-1224 – or online at

• On Tuesday, May 17, another morning meal will feature interaction with Bishop William Skylstad, Bishop Emeritus of the Spokane Diocese.

“Breakfast with Bishop Skylstad” begins at 8 a.m. and is scheduled to conclude by 10 a.m. The morning includes the opportunity to participate in Mass, socialize with the bishop, and hear his thoughts on the topic “From Pews to Shoes – Walking the Talk.” Cost for the event is $15 per person.

Bishop Skylstad is the former bishop of the Dioceses of Spokane and Yakima. He also served as vice president and president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, as a pastor, and a seminary rector. Advance registration is requested.

• A silent day of prayer on the topic “Mary: Receiver and Proclaimer of Mercy!” is scheduled for Wednesday, May 18, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Presenting the day is Father Victor Blazovich, pastor of the parishes in Newport, Metaline Falls, Usk, Ione, and the Kalispel Reservation, and Associate Director of Vocations for the Spokane Diocese.

Mary, well educated in the Old Testament stories of God’s mercy, and herself “full of grace” (Luke 1), knew deeply of the Lord’s mercy as she traveled to assist Elizabeth, her cousin, with the birth of John the Baptist. She gave the example of how to cross the boundaries of natural living, to “go into the peripheries,” as Pope Francis advises, to bring God’s mercy to those in need.

The day begins with recitation of the rosary. It includes two conferences, opportunity to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation, Mass, and lunch, and concludes with Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.

Cost is $38 per person ($48 with the use of a private room for the day.)

• A weekend retreat titled “Attaining Interior Freedom and Peace in the School of the Holy Spirit” is scheduled for Friday-Sunday, May 20-22, at IHRC.

The retreat will be led by Father Jacques Philippe.

Father Philippe describes simple and concrete ways to live in docility to the Holy Spirit by removing obstacles to interior freedom and peace. He illustrates how to be open to the Holy Spirit’s guidance, allowing the Spirit to illuminate and strengthen hearts.

Father Philippe was born in 1947 in Lorraine, France. After studying mathematics in college, he spent several years teaching and doing scientific research. In 1976, he entered the Community of the Beatitudes, and then spent several years in Jerusalem and Nazareth immersing himself in the study of Hebrew and the Jewish roots of Christianity. He studied theology and canon law in Rome, and worked as spiritual director and in the formation of priests. He also has written five books on spirituality.

The weekend begins with registration on Friday at 6 p.m. and extends through lunch on Sunday. Cost is $196 per person, $302 for couples (includes meals and overnight), and $110 for commuters (no overnights). Early registration is recommended.

For information and registration for these and other IHRC events, call the retreat center at (509) 448-1224, or visit the web site: IHRC is located at 6910 S. Ben Burr Rd., Spokane.
